Did You Know 2-22-21

DID YOU KNOW? At the end of January, there were 1.04 million homes for sale, down 26% from a year earlier, the lowest on record since 1982, according to the NAR. In January, the NAR had 1.45 million members, up 4.8% from a year earlier. More agents than houses for sale? (WSJ)

DID YOU KNOW? In 2019, the annual average electricity price for all types of electric utility customers ranged from 28.72¢ per kWh in Hawaii to 7.71¢ per kWh in Louisiana.

DID YOU KNOW? Tomorrow is here. Smart thermostats, autonomous vacuums, and intelligent speakers, programmable shades, connected refrigerators monitor our supply of milk. We can rely on smart flowerpots to water the plants, smart pet feeders to dispense kibble to the dog, and smart locks to let the maintenance worker in—all while we’re out of the house. By 2023, more than 50% of American households, and one-sixth of those around the world, are expected to have smart home devices. Maybe a good COMPASS Concierge upgrade pre-listing? (SLATE)

DID YOU KNOW? The top sliver of high-income Americans dodge significantly more in income taxes than the IRS’s methods had previously assumed, according to forthcoming estimates from IRS researchers and academic economists. Overall, the paper estimates that the top 1% of households fail to report about 21% of their income, with 6 percentage points of that due to sophisticated strategies that random audits don’t detect. For the top 0.1%, unreported income may be nearly twice as large as conventional IRS methodologies would suggest. Tax rates could actually be LOWERED if everyone paid what they legally owed..... (WSJ)

DID YOU KNOW? Between 1997 and 2017, the proportion of people aged between 35 and 44 living in rental accommodation in England rose from 9 to 28%. UK house prices rose by 93% in real terms between 2000 and 2020, but only by 29% in Germany. (FT)
